ignimbrite Definition

A type of ignimbrite is a volcanic rock occurring as a result of a dehydration reaction during a catastrophic eruption where particulate matter is blasted into the air from a volcanic explosion that is high in water or gas content. It is often characterized by layers of coarse and fine ash, and fragments of lava. Ignimbrites are found in ash-flow tuff deposits around the world.
