Definition

Labarre is a type of benign cervical dystonia characterized by spasmodic contractions of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and trapezius muscle, often leading to an uncontrolled tilting of the head to one side. It is also referred to as 'head shaking syndrome'. The condition is generally benign, and symptoms can be managed with medications and physical therapy. The term is named after Dr. Georges Jean Saintouston Labarre, a French neurologist and psychiatrist.
